I was inspired to do this photo set as a homage to photographer Mervyn O’Gorman’s autochrome portraits from 1913. Mervyn O’Gorman was an English engineer whose artistic interests turned him into one of the early pioneers of color photography. Using the Autochrome Lumière process that was launched in 1907, O’Gorman shot images that are now regularly featured in exhibitions of early color photos. I took these photos with my Graflex Crown Graphic with color 4x5 sheet film and hand developed them myself using the C41 process.
